Chemical Structure:

D-Glucuronic Acid Application:

D-glucuronic acid is a very important natural organic acid, the oxidized form of glucose. It plays a vital role in organisms, especially in detoxification and the synthesis of various biomacromolecules. It has a six-carbon sugar (sugar) backbone, very similar to glucose, but unlike glucose, the hydroxymethyl group (-CH₂OH) on its sixth carbon atom (C-6) is oxidized to a carboxyl group (-COOH). Therefore, it has both an aldehyde group (-CHO) and a carboxyl group (-COOH), making it an aldonic acid. It has plenty of applications on pharmaceutical and food supplements filed.

In Pharmaceutical field, binding and detoxification (conjugation), the most famous function of D-glucuronic acid. The liver is rich in UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs), which transfer the glucuronic acid group from UDPGA to various fat-soluble (hydrophobic) exogenous or endogenous substances, such as drugs and bilirubin. This process is called “glucuronidation.” After conjugation, the water solubility of these substances is greatly increased, making them more easily excreted through bile or urine, thereby reducing their toxicity and biological activity. Although not as well-known as glucose, D-glucuronic acid is a key biochemical molecule that connects metabolism, detoxification, and structural support, and is essential for maintaining the body’s health.

D-Glucuronic acid is widely present in both the animal and plant kingdoms, usually in the form of glucosides combined with sugars, phenols, or alcohols. It can serve as an important intermediate in the synthesis of Calcium D-Gluconate, D-Saccharic Acid 1,4-Lactone, and L-Ascorbic Acid. In addition, it can also be used as a food additive and incorporated into functional beverages, such as, it’s often combined with glucosamine, hyaluronic acid, and other ingredients in joint health formulas, also it helps improve detoxification and metabolism and enhance liver function.

In cosmetics, D-Glucuronic acid, it usually used in skin care formulations as a moisturizer, antioxidant, or precursor of hyaluronic acid.

Additionally, Recent studies have shown that D-Glucuronic acid  has great potential in apple preservation.

Please noted:

Stability: D-Glucuronic acid absorbs moisture easily and may cause caking or decomposition due to prolonged exposure.

Compatibility Note: In preparations or formulas, direct contact with strong oxidants or strong acidic substances should be avoided to prevent decomposition
