Ceramides are compounds formed by the dehydration of long-chain fatty acids and the amino group of sphingosine. Sphingosine is attached with an amino acid. Depending on the amino acid, ceramides are named ceramide 1 to 12. The ceramides commonly used in cosmetics are:
